Previewing the Teams
Cal State Stanislaus (1-0)
*The Warriors have just one game under their belt, but it was enough for 6'9” senior Reggie Jones to earn CCAA Player of the Week honors for his 24-point, 14-rebound performance. Jones and senior guard Dan Daviess are the returning starters off last year's team and with one of the top recruiting classes in the league, the Warriors expect to contend in the NCAA Division II's CCAA. The top newcomers include junior guards Marcus Walters, Donald Gaines, Vincent Fuller and Joseph Malone.
Fresno Pacific (4-1)
*The Sunbirds began the season ranked #25 in the NAIA and are off to a 4-1 start. Leading the way has been point guard
Kenny Bradford (18 ppg) and forward
George DeLeon (17.4 ppg). Guards
Zach Kaul (11.2 ppg) and
Matt Christman (10 ppg) are also averaging in double figures. The Sunbird roster is currently a bit thin due to injuries, but the team gets former All-American
Donte Nicholas back next month.
Texas A&M International (3-2)
*In two seasons, head coach
Shane Rinner has turned the program around, taking the Dustdevils to their first ever conference title and NCAA Division II tournament last March. Guard Ryan McLucas leads a senior-dominated roster averaging 11.2 points per game, followed by center Evan Matteson (10.2 ppg) and guard Brian Schaeffer (9.6 ppg). Schaeffer is the team's leading rebounder (6.6 rpg) and guard Scottie Payne leads the team in assists (3.8 apg).
UC Merced (0-2)
*Playing in just their first season of NAIA basketball the Bobcats, under first-year coach and Merced native John Sykes, have showed themselves to be no pushovers. With a roster of primarily local talent, UC Merced gave some early trouble to GSAC foe Westmont before giving Fresno Pacific all it could handle last weekend, falling in overtime in the program's first ever home game. Aki Chambers is the team's top offensive threat, averaging 20.5 points in the first two games.
