RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In game two of the CWPA Invitational Fresno Pacific nearly knocked off #17 Cal Baptist, falling to the host Lancers 13-10.
Mateja Maksimovic scored four goals and
Glenn Lyon added three for the Sunbirds.
Jake Finney made 10 saves.
The Sunbirds led 6-5 at halftime after a goal from Lyon gave the team its first lead. The Lancers would come back in the third but a Maksimovic goal brought FPU within one at 9-8 with four minutes left. CBU would score again but Maksimovic answered right back to keep the deficit at one. The Lancers then added two goals in what would prove to be too much to overcome.
In game two, FPU's final game of the season, the Sunbirds lost a heartbreaker 11-10 to Vanguard. FPU led 10-9 with two minutes to play but surrendered the final two goals to end the season on a down note. Lyon scored three goals and Finney tallied another 10 saves.
FPU had been ahead 7-4 in the second quarter before the Lions began to hit their stride. FPU took a 9-7 lead into the fourth quarter after
Sascha Ludwig ended the third with a goal. Two quick goals by the Lions would tie it before
Andreas Sahlberg put the Sunbirds up 10-9. However, Vanguard's Jason Lee would score with 1:25 remaining and again with just three seconds left to win it for VU.
"It was a tough weekend of games," said FPU coach
Bryan Suhovy. "I feel it was some of the best polo we've played all season though. The team really came together and played good, clean games. We just came up a little short. All in all we were proud of the team's play, just frustrated with the outcome. We fought hard, but circumstances just didn't play out in our favor."
It was an up and down season for a young Sunbird team that dealt with a lot of injuries and played one of the toughest schedules in the nation, at any level. The team loses senior
Nick Fadden to graduation, but brings back its core nucleus of players that should make for a formidable team next season.
"Although losing Nick will have a big impact on our lineup, we're excited about the future of the program as our younger players develop and continue to gain experience," said Suhovy.
