Mattaliano leads Sunbird comeback

Box Score

Julian Mattaliano was the difference-maker in the Sunbirds' 2-1 victory over Hope International on Saturday, heading in the eventual game-winner in the 63rd minute and assisting on a game-tying goal late in the first half.

The Sunbirds (9-5, 5-2 GSAC), coming off two frustrating losses, found themselves trailing 1-0 in the first half after HIU's Zach Hoffer launched a 45-foot prayer that somehow found the net over keeper Steven Waite. Despite the frustration, the team composed  themselves and continued to impose their style of play on a scrappy HIU team that didn't slow down for the full 90 minutes.

Just before halftime, Mattaliano got around his defender and served in a cross that Fabricio Nazare headed in to tie it. The Sunbirds continued to create chances in the second half and Mattaliano would capitalize on a beautiful Paul Islas cross in the 64th minute to put the team up for good.

"We were a little tentative in the first half," said coach Jaime Ramirez following the win. "We knew what we needed to do though and ended up creating many opportunities to score and getting the ball to the right people."

Ramirez applauded the play of Mattaliano, who listened to his coach's instruction on some adjustments midway through the first half.

"Every once in a while a guy has his day in the sun and today it was Julian. He was working really hard on doing the right things," said Ramirez.

The FPU defense, headed up by Luke Tyler and Adrian Arias would help the team close it out. Waite made five saves in goal to preserve the victory.

HIU, the only team in the GSAC to have beaten first-place Concordia, fell to 5-7-1, 2-5 in conference play.

"I like their team," said Ramirez, "and their spirit. They play well and really maximize what they have. It was an exciting match to watch."

The Sunbirds look to continue their momentum on Tuesday as they host Westmont at 7 pm. FPU is still very much alive in the conference race, trailing only Concordia and Azusa Pacific.
