LONG BEACH, Calif. - The PacWest Conference announced their weekly men's soccer honorees on Monday afternoon.
Zion Vaughn captured his second PacWest Player of the Week honor after securing another brace in the 5-2 triumph over Concordia University Irvine.
Vaughn earned PacWest Player of the Week thanks to his remarkable performance in the 5-2 showdown against CUI, who was ranked number two in the PacWest. With only three games remaining in the regular season, Vaughn did everything in his power to give FPU the advantage on Senior Night, ultimately tallying two goals in the second half.
During a scramble in the box, Vaughn and
Brandon Lopez made magic happen as they worked in tandem to score the third goal of the game. Lopez's reaction to a long pass effectively bounced in Vaughn's direction, allowing the lead scorer to head it into the low corner of the net. The 'Birds energy was palpable as they claimed a 3-1 lead over the Golden Eagles. Soon after, Vaughn captured another goal that was one for the books. It bounced off the heads of fellow teammates
Julian Aran Martin and
Sean Williamson in succinct fashion before Vaughn got the chance to send it between the bars.
He also played a part in Concordia's own goal in the final thirty seconds of the game. Vaughn's attempt to chip the ball into the goal ended up falling into a defender's path which deflecting off him to make it 5-2.
The sophomore forward has nine goals on the season with two assists under his belt. He captured his first brace in the 2-0 shutout over Hawaii Hilo and his second was on Saturday against Concordia. Vaughn's shot percentage is at an impressive 0.375 with .708 of his shots being on target to score. The Division I transfer from University of the Pacific has been crucial for the Sunbirds, starting in five matches and tallying 724 minutes over the course of the season. In the Pacwest, he is ranked seventh in shots on goal (17), fourth in goals (9), and fifth in points with 20 overall.
The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team is 6-7-2 overall and 5-2-1 in PacWest play.
