Sunbirds test another top team, but late run fuels APU to victory

Box Score

Fresno Pacific took the lead in the second half, but a 16-2 run by Azusa Pacific would propel the #7 Cougars to a 75-63 victory over the Sunbirds Tuesday night in Fresno.

Michele Rebozzi knocked down a jumper with 11:24 left in the game to give the Sunbirds a 51-49 lead. The Cougars would quickly respond though, getting a three-point play on the other end to begin a 16-2 run.

APU's Eboni Sadler did the bulk of the damage, scoring the next 13 points in a row for the Cougars and putting the Sunbirds out of reach.

The Sunbirds had trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but closed the gap to make it a four-point game heading into the locker room. After falling behind by seven early in the second half, Rebozzi and Jenay Herring brought FPU back with back-to-back three-pointers.

Rebozzi led the Sunbirds with 16 points. Jessica Torrecillas added 12 and Herring finished with 11. Breana Buczek had nine points, all in the first half.

Sadler finished with a game-high 24 points for APU, which improved to 17-4, 9-2 in the GSAC. Alex Moore-Porter and Briana Hall added 13 each. Hall had seven assists and Michelle Byrd finished with 13 rebounds.

The Sunbirds were done in by a 25-2 APU advantage on second-chance points. FPU also had one of its lowest free-throw shooting performances of the season, making just 56 percent.

Another tough test awaits the Sunbirds, as the team travels to Costa Mesa for a Saturday game against #12 Vanguard. The Lions won the first meeting with FPU in Fresno 63-49, though FPU was neck and neck with Vanguard until the closing minutes.
