Fresno Pacific narrowly defeated Azusa Pacific 7-6 in a rematch of last night's home opener. The Sunbirds then went on to face a talented CSU Monterey Bay squad, falling 15-4.
Brittney Guerrero led FPU on the day with three goals. Jenn Wolter, Katie Rayner and Michelle Kaplan had two scores apiece while Jaimie Lugo had one. Dani Mortimer posted 26 saves on the day, including three three meter blocks.
In the rematch against Azusa Pacific, the Cougars played a much tighter game with the addition of several key players who sat out the previous night's match.
The first half saw neither team go up by more than a goal and ended with the score tied 4-4. After a stalemate third quarter that ended at 5-all, the Sunbirds were able to go up by two goals in the fourth and hang on for the 7-6 win.
"Azusa's added players forced us to earn the win," said coach Bryan Suhovy, "but we were able to pull through for the victory."
FPU came out sluggish against CSU Monterey Bay in the day's second game. Unable to match the Otter's aggressive play, the Sunbirds fell behind quickly and dropped the 15-4 loss.
"We weren't mentally prepared for the game and they out-reacted us," said Suhovy. "We play them again in two weeks and we'll be better prepared then."
"We worked really hard today," said Kaplan. "We have a lot of work to do before our next game, but I know we can come out on top!"
"We played well and we played with heart. This is only the beginning of what we will accomplish this season," added Rayner.
The Sunbirds will face Santa Clara and Monterey Bay on February 5 in Monterey.
