Women's Water Polo takes Sonoma State to the wire on season-opening weekend

Fresno Pacific played two games on Saturday to open the 2011 season, falling to the Olympic Club team 19-8 before playing Sonoma State down to the final seconds in a 10-9 loss.

Katie Rayner, Michelle Kaplan, and Nikki Haley all posted four goals on the day. Jenn Wolter had two goals, while Melissa Perry, Jamie Lugo, and Krista Loper all had one. Dani Mortimer had 13 saves.

"It was a good weekend for us...a solid start for the season," said coach Bryan Suhovy.

Against Sonoma State, the Sunbirds put forth a strong effort, coming from behind to tie the game 7-7 at the end of the third quarter. The Seawolves got the last word, however, scoring in the final seconds to take the 10-9 victory.

"We played really well against Sonoma," said team captain Brittney Guerrero. "We had our heads in the game all four quarters."

In the first game the team faced Olympic Club, a team composed of alumni from top national programs. FPU played a solid first half, pulling within one, before Olympic Club made their run, pulling ahead to a 19-8 win. The loss won't count against FPU's record.

"We showed a lot of good things today," said Suhovy. "We have a lot to work on, but this was some of the best early-season water polo we've played in the last three years."

The Sunbirds will play their home opener next week, taking on Azusa Pacific on January 21.
