Sunbirds make quick work of Vanguard

No. 1 Fresno Pacific made quick work of visiting Vanguard University on Saturday, winning 25-12, 25-14, 25-14.  The Sunbirds added another win to their undefeated season moving to 12-0, 4-0 in GSAC play.

Michelle Johnson had 11 of the teams 47 kills, committing only 1 error.  Erica Adachi and Emily Carroll had 22 and 16 assists, respectively.  Mariah Mandelbaum finished with 17 digs and Kathleen Anderson added four blocks.

FPU hit .389 as a team, overwhelming Vanguard's .036. Martina Gregusova and Keke Wang each added nine kills in the win.

The Sunbirds' control of the match was never in doubt, as they dominated the first set, hitting .583.  Lisa Schilling finalized the set with one of her seven kills.

The Lions came closest in the second set, pulling within one, at 9-8.  The Sunbirds capitalized on several extended rallies, however, and scored five unanswered points.  Vanguard was unable to respond, as FPU pulled away to take the set by an 11-point margin.

The third set saw the Sunbirds go up 8-1 before the Lions could answer.  FPU had a match-high 18 team kills, sealing the victory in 58 total minutes.

"We didn't let up throughout the whole match," Mandelbaum commented after the win.  "I was excited about our high level of play."

The Sunbirds' victory set the Lions back to 2-2 in GSAC play.  FPU will host Hope International on Tuesday at 7 pm in the Special Events Center.
