Sunbirds fall 3-1 at Sacramento State

BOX SCORE

FPU suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to NCAA Division 1 Sacramento State 3-1.

The Hornets struck early when Chris Bettencourt netted a pass from Ernesto Carranza in the seventh minute, giving them the 1-0 lead. FPU wasted no time coming back though as Paul Islas got by a defender and blasted a low shot into the back of the net just two minutes later.

Sacramento State would capitalize on two opportunities late in the first half that took all of the momentum away from the Sunbirds. Carranza picked up his second assist of the game, finding David Norton for a header in the 39th minute which put the Hornets up 2-1.

Chimdum Mez would add another goal four minutes later on a cross from Bettencourt to put the Hornets up 3-1 at half. The teams then played a scoreless second half, as FPU was unable to keep the Hornets from getting shots off.

The Sunbirds had six shots on the night, compared to 20 for the Hornets. FPU goalie Steven Waite had an active night, making eight saves.

FPU returns home next Saturday for a 7 pm match against Sonoma State, the #22 team in NCAA Division II. SSU recently took NCAA #14 Stanford to the wire, losing 3-2.
