Water polo finishes 2-2 in Cal Lutheran Tournament

Sunbirds defeat Occidental and La Verne 8-7 and 11-2

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Fresno Pacific (3-14) had a good tournament this weekend going 2-2 at Cal Lutheran.  The Sunbirds were able to pull out wins against Occidental and La Verne while they fell to CSU Monterey Bay and Whittier in two tight games 7-9 and 8-9, respectively.

“We played very well overall, continuing to show improvement. The girls really stepped up today showing a lot of maturity and discipline,” commented Coach Bryan Suhovy.

Katie Rayner led the Sunbirds with eight goals, putting up two goals in each game of the tournament.  Nicolette Haley and Melissa Perry also scored in every game for the Sunbirds with five and four goals, respectively.

Dani Mortimer came up big in the goalie cage with 27 saves and 9 steals on the weekend.  Mortimer held Occidental scoreless in the final quarter to allow the Sunbirds to come back with a 3-0 run, and kept La Verne scoreless in their entire first half.

The Sunbirds continue play down in Southern California with No. 7 Loyola Marymount at UC Santa Barbara.  The game will begin at 2:30 p.m on Sunday, March 7.
