Fresno Pacific defeated conference foe Vanguard 77-67 in Fresno on Saturday, bringing the team's conference record to 1-1.

Deshaun Legree led the Sunbirds with 18 points. Adam Kado and Jerante Morgan added 14 apiece. Casper Hesseldal scored 11 and Kendall Holmes# chipped in with 10.

The Sunbirds trailed 33-31 at halftime, but Legree began the second half with two quick buckets and Kado followed with a three-pointer to put the Sunbirds up five. Defensive stops would lead to baskets for the Sunbirds, who would never trail from that point.

"It was a battle. We ground it out," said FPU head coach Chris Wright. "We definitely scored better in the second half.  Vanguard made it tough for us to score, but our guys stepped up and got some big plays when we needed them. We settled down and started making shots."

FPU shot 45 percent on the night as the team improved to 6-3 overall. Alex Chapman led Vanguard with 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Lions dropped to 1-5, 0-2 GSAC.

The Sunbirds are back in action at home on Thursday, taking on The Master's at 7:30 pm.

"It will be another tough game," said Wright. "There's no easy one's in the GSAC.  It will be a good test to see where we're at so far this season."
