FPU gets past William Jessup 55-52 to improve to 4-0

Box Score

Kelly Thompson had 14 points and 13 rebounds as Fresno Pacific won 55-52 on the road against William Jessup on Wednesday night.

The Sunbirds improve to 4-0 with the win, while the Warriors fell to 0-6. Jessica Torrecillas added 11 points for FPU and Michele Rebozzi finished with nine. Jenay Herring had five assists in the victory.

"That was a very good William Jessup team, hungry to break their losing streak," said FPU head coach Erin Scholz. "I'm happy that we pulled out the win and continued to persevere when nothing was clicking, but we need to create some energy in our practices this week."

FPU led by as many as 10, four minutes into the second half, after a three-pointer by Rebozzi. Over the next four minutes though, the Warriors would go on a 10-1 run to make it a 40-39 FPU lead, then would tie the game with 9:14 remaining.

The teams battled down the stretch and WJU would take a brief lead 44-43 with seven minutes to play. Thompson answered immediately with a three-pointer to put the Sunbirds back on top. The Warriors would cut the lead to one multiple times in the closing minutes, but the Sunbirds got key stops when they needed them, including a steal by Herring with 13 seconds to play.

Torrecillas and Callie Rohrbacker made crucial buckets in the closing minutes to help preserve the win.

Both teams turned the ball over 20 times in the game. Ashley Rose had 20 points for WJU, leading all scorers and going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line.

The Sunbirds return home on Tuesday night when they face Holy Names at 6 pm.
