Fresno Pacific rebounded from its first loss of the season with a sweep of #10 Concordia (25-19, 25-19, 26-24). The Sunbirds improved to 16-0 in GSAC play with the win.
“We came out very ready and played exceptionally well,” said coach Dennis Janzen. “We have a pretty special group and I'm not surprised at the way they responded today.”
Martina Gregusova had 13 kills and Keke Wang added 11 to lead FPU.
The Sunbirds came out determined, hitting .452 in the first set and building up a 17-10 lead before going on to win 25-19. FPU led for almost the entire second set as well, going up 21-11 before letting the Eagles creep back into it. A Gregusova kill would close out the set 25-19.
The third set was a battle all the way through and Concordia actually had a chance to win it, leading 24-23. Janzen called timeout though and after an Eagle service error, Mariah Mandelbaum delivered a service ace and Michelle Johnson followed with a block to end the match 26-24.
Mandelbaum finished with 17 digs to lead all players and Erica Adachi led FPU with 24 assists. Johnson finished with seven kills and five blocks. CUI had just two team blocks on the night.
FPU travels to Azusa Pacific on Tuesday for a 7 pm match with the #8 Cougars (24-5, 11-5 GSAC)
“We have two very difficult matches coming up, at Azusa and then back home against Cal Baptist,” said Janzen. “We need to continue to get better and those matches will give us a good chance to see where we're at.”
