IRVINE, CA. - After leading for nearly 39 minutes and 45 seconds, the Sunbirds men's basketball team lost in heartbreaking fashion to #2 Concordia of Irvine 63-61 Saturday evening in GSAC play. A jumper by the Eagles' Justin Johnson in the final seconds of the game kept the Sunbirds from the upset win and preserved CUI's perfect season at 19-0 (9-0 GSAC).
The Sunbirds (14-5, 4-5 GSAC) were led with a couple of 14-point performances by senior guards
James Lewis Jr. and
Alex Davenport. Senior
Todd Brown also pitched in with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
FPU led by as much as 14 points with 15:48 left in the second period, but a late push by the Eagles slowly closed the gap to eventually overtake the Sunbirds.
Johnson led the way for Concordia with a game-high 17 points and was dominant in the paint with 11 boards.
