The FPU women's soccer team dropped their first official game to a physical CSU Stanislaus team 3-0 Saturday evening in Turlock, CA to fall to 0-1. The Sunbirds conceded two penalty kicks in the match that gave the Warriors a 2-0 advantage, with CSUS's final goal coming late in the game.
Fresno Pacific began the game well and battled toe-to-toe with the Division II squad, but could not keep them off the board in the first half. The Sunbirds were called for a foul in the box in the 30th minute which gave the Warriors their first penalty of the night that Alena Smajlagic converted for the 1-0 lead.
The first half would end competitively with the Sunbirds trailing 1-0.
Fresno Pacific continued to keep the game close up until the 66th minute when another penalty was called after an FPU player leveled a Stanislaus player in the box. Warrior Maryanne Sayles slotted the penalty to make it 2-0.
Lisa Garcia ended the scoring for Stanislaus with the third and final goal in the 82nd minute.
"All things considered, I felt that we played better than the 3-0 score line showed and it was overall an improvement over our last performance," said FPU head coach Erik Farfan. "We just made a couple of mental errors that allowed the game to get away from us. Needless to say, we still have alot of work to do but will continue to be optimistic," Farfan added.
The FPU women's soccer team will be back in action Wednesday September 2nd when they host an alumni scrimmage. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm.
