#8 Sunbirds Control Cougars With Histroric 98-91 Win

Box score

Azusa, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team moved up from #14 to #8 in the NAIA nationally rankings earlier this week and were looking to build off that latest accomplishment with what would be a tough away win at Azusa Pacific (RV). The Sunbirds did exactly that and came out with enough determination to take a 49-32 halftime lead. FPU was then able to withstand a late Cougar run and closed the game out for a 98-91 victory and their 10th win in a row. This was the first away win for Fresno Pacific men's basketball at APU since 1992.

Four Fresno Pacific players scored in double figures contributing to a solid team road win.

FPU junior point guard Adam Kado filled in for regular starting guard Kevin McCaughey who saw minimal minutes due to illness, and scored a season high 26 points. Kado led the Sunbirds in scoring going 7-11 from the field, 6-8 from the line, and was an impressive 6-7 from three-point distance. Junior guard James Lewis also contributed with 22 points, junior forward Todd Brown put up 19, and junior guard Jermaine Jones had 10 points on the night.

FPU shot impressively going 31-54 (57%) from the field, 12-21 (57%) from three-point line, and 24-30 (80%) from the free-throw line.

The Sunbirds extended their lead to as much as 23 points with 17:22 left to play, but the Cougars clawed back to cut the deficit to just one point late in the second half. However, FPU was able to foil APU's comeback down the stretch with solid free-throw shooting to go on to win by seven points.

"We are very proud of these young men. This is a great Program win for men's basketball and a historical win for FPU," complimented FPU head coach Jim Saia.

With the win, Fresno Pacific improves to 13-3 and remain a perfect 6-0 in the GSAC. FPU's #8 national ranking is the highest in school history and the Sunbirds are poised to continue their current ten game run this weekend when they host San Diego Christian Saturday, January 17th in FPU's Special Event Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30PM.
