Sunbirds Secure Highest-Ever Commissioner's Cup Finish in PacWest Swansong

LONG BEACH, Calif. - With their time as full members of the Pacific West Conference coming to an end this summer, Fresno Pacific University secured their highest-ever finish in the Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup. The Sunbirds (10.38 points) will finish the 2025-26 campaign in second place in the annual competition. Point Loma Nazarene University (13.00) won their second consecutive Commissioner's Cup, while Azusa Pacific (10.27) round out the top three.

"I am incredibly proud of our 2025-26 campaign across the entire department, including the sports that compete outside the PacWest," said Kyle Ferguson, FPU's Director of Athletics. "The final standings are a collective effort of FPU Athletics, from our office, gameday, and support staff to our coaches and student-athletes."

The Sunbirds never finished higher than 5th or lower than 7th in the 11 years they were eligible for the Cup from 2013-25.  FPU's explosion up the table should come as no surprise based on the results over the past academic year. Two conference championships (Volleyball, Men's Track & Field) combined with a pair of second place finishes (Men's Cross Country, Baseball) and numerous top-four finishes (Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Women's Tennis, Women's Track & Field) paced the Sunbirds, with valuable points picked up along the way from Women's Cross Country, Soccer, Basketball and Men's Tennis.

"These results reflect the momentum and trajectory of both our department and institution as we continue working to establish ourselves as a premier NCAA Division II athletics department on the west coast," Ferguson added.

The PacWest Commissioner's Cup was established in 2007-08 to honor the athletic program with the best overall performance in that academic year. The competition is based upon average finish in PacWest sports. Each school's points are totaled and then divided by the number of PacWest athletic programs it offers, giving an overall average finish for the school. In 2023-24, the name was changed from PacWest Commissioner's Cup to the Bob Hogue Commissioner's Cup in honor of the retiring commissioner who led the conference for 16 years.  FPU programs that did not compete in the PacWest Conference include Men's and Women's Swimming (PCSC), Men's and Women's Water Polo (WWPA), and STUNT (West Conference).  The PacWest has announced that STUNT will be added ahead of the 2026-27 season, and the Sunbirds are expected to be members.
