LOS ANGELES, Calif. – At the end of spring break, the Fresno Pacific track and field team sent Sunbirds south to compete in several long distance events at the Occidental Distance Carnival.
The Sunbird runners performed well down in SoCal, battling intense competitors in the late afternoon. Battling warm conditions and a talented group of opponents, Fresno Pacific athletes showed resilience and determination across the track.
In the 800 meter run, senior Sunbird
Emanuel Salas came in sixth with a time of 1:54.65.
Aidan Ransom finished next for FPU in the 24
th spot, coming in at 1:58.43. For the women,
Mattie Whipple was the fifth to finish at the 2:14.99 mark, followed by
Gianna Menchu in the 15
th slot (2:21.92) and
Ariana Womack capturing 34
th (2:27.53).
In the 1500 meter run, freshman superstar
Luke Sanders led the Sunbird pack with a second-place finish (3:54.39).
Monte Moore was the next to finish for FPU, placing eighth overall (4:01.71). Whipple broke the Top 20 finishers in the event, concluding the race in 17
th place.
Daniel Galvez took the top four spot in the 3000 meter Steeplechase with an impressive 9:56.44 showing. Trailing behind Galvez was
Sawyer Pugliese who came in tenth (10:16.80).
The 'Birds worked diligently in the 5000 meter run.
Evan Torres and
Rodney Chemalmal, the FPU cross country all-conference duo, captured 26
th and 27
th overall. Whereas, Lady 'Birds
Julissa Avila and
Julia Martinez outpaced several competitors, coming in 19
th and 24
th respectively to end the day.
