Shahrokhi and Hernandez to Lead FPU Soccer Programs in 2025 & Beyond

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University Athletics Department is pleased to announce that Cameron Shahrokhi and Roberto Hernandez have been elevated to the role of Head Coach for the Sunbirds Men's and Women's soccer teams, respectively.  Both Shahrokhi and Hernandez served as Associate Head Coach for the programs under Director of Soccer, Jaime Ramirez, since July of 2024.

"Cameron and Roberto are great young coaches, and we're excited to see them step into their new roles," said FPU Director of Athletics Kyle Ferguson.  "Their leadership, dedication, and vision for the future of Sunbird soccer make them the right fit to continue building on our strong foundation.  With Jaime continuing in his role as Director of Soccer providing guidance and continuity, we are confident this structure will set our teams up for success," Ferguson added.

Ramirez remains an integral part of the program as Director of Soccer, with 2025 being his 44th season with the Sunbirds.  The four-time Hall of Fame inductee, who starred on the pitch for FPU from 1977 – 1980, was Head Coach of the men's program from 1991 – 2024 and led the women's program from their first season of competition in 2001 – 2005 and again in 2021.  Ramirez became FPU Director of Soccer in January of 2024, which primarily consists of advising both men's and women's coaching staffs on all aspects of the game on and off the pitch as well as serving as a mentor to the head coaches and their student-athletes.  Additionally, Ramirez will play a crucial role in guiding the development of future projects, fundraising efforts, and community outreach as FPU continues to establish itself as a premier NCAA Division II institution.

"I would like to congratulate Roberto and Cameron on their new appointment as Head Coaches of our women's and men's soccer programs respectively," said Ramirez.  "It's a wonderful opportunity for them to embark on this journey of intercollegiate athletics.  I am eager to see where God leads us in how we shepherd our student-athletes to become men and women of God through their experience in our soccer programs.  May the Lord guide and direct each of them in this new endeavor."

In Shahrokhi's first season at FPU, the Sunbird Men finished with a winning record of 8-7-5 and were runners up in the inaugural PacWest Conference Championships.  Some highlights from that first season included two All-PacWest selections, forward Lucas Ribeiro leading the PacWest in goals, and a pair of victories against regular season champ and NCAA West Region qualifier Point Loma over an eight-day span.  Shahrokhi's first game in charge of FPU was a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in an exhibition game against NCAA Division I University of the Pacific, FPU's first win over a D-I program in 23 years.

Prior to FPU, Shahrokhi was Boys' Varsity Head Coach and Director of Soccer at Clovis North High School.  In his seven seasons he led the Broncos to an overall record of 138-20-19, along with five conference championships, two section championships, and two national top ten finishes.  He was a four-time conference coach of the year.  Additionally, Shahrokhi found success as an assistant coach at Fresno City College and Buchanan High School, as well as in the club ranks leading California Odyssey SC to two state cup championships and one national runner up finish.  Throughout his career he has coached and developed players who have excelled at the professional, Division I, and Division II ranks.

As a player, Shahrokhi was a national champion at Clovis West in 2006 as well as an all-conference selection and two-time conference champion at Fresno City College.  He played two years for the Fresno Fuego in the PDL.

The Fresno-native earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Fresno State and lives locally with his wife Alexis and their three daughters.  He holds coaching licenses issued by the United States Soccer Federation, United Soccer Coaches, and Asian Football Confederation.

Hernandez's first season with the Sunbirds was highlighted by significant signs of progress throughout the program.  He inherited a team that finished 2-13-2 in 2023 and guided them to an improved 4-8-4 finish in 2024.  Under Hernandez and his staff's guidance, GK Monique Nevarez set a new single-season school record in clean sheets, recording seven.  Most notably, the team's defense saw a significant improvement allowing just 17 goals compared to the prior season's 49.  Additionally, Hernandez's side gave up fewer shots, chances, and corner kicks to the opposition in 2024.

The Bakersfield native has an extensive coaching career in the college, club, and development ranks.  Prior to FPU he was an assistant coach for men's soccer at Biola University as well as NAIA programs San Diego Christian and Westcliff University.  As an assistant at D-II Cal Poly Pomona, he helped the team to a CCAA title and NCAA West Region berth in 2019.  Hernandez oversaw numerous club programs including Santa Monica United, SoCal Reds, and Steel United Conejo Valley where he guided the clubs to numerous undefeated seasons and conference championships.  He also coached the goalkeepers at the LAFC (MLS) Youth Academy.  He has helped develop numerous players who would excel in the professional and collegiate ranks, as well as receive call-ups to their represented national teams.

A goalkeeper during his playing days, Hernandez played collegiately at CSU Monterey Bay, Fresno City College, and University of Antelope Valley.  After college, he played at numerous levels across the country, including a call up to the U20 Guatemala National Team.

In addition to a bachelor's degree from CSU Bakersfield, Hernandez holds a master's degree in Coaching & Athletic Administration from Concordia University-Irvine.  He holds a "B" coaching license issued by the United State Soccer Federation.

The entire athletics administration is excited about the future of both the men's and women's soccer programs with Cameron and Roberto in charge.  With their dedication to recruitment and tactical leadership on the pitch, combined with Jaime's continued program direction and guidance off the pitch, FPU soccer enters into one of its strongest positions for success in program history.  We all wish Cameron and Roberto the very best as they start the latest chapters of their careers leading young men and women in their journeys as FPU student-athletes and followers of Christ.
