LA MIRADA, Calif. – The FPU women's soccer team (5-2-2, 2-0 PacWest) continued its hot streak on Thursday with a 2-0 win over Biola (1-6-1, 0-1 PacWest) to move its total to six points on the season.
"The team gave fantastic effort tonight," head coach
Joel Robinson said. "We struggled a bit in the first half but stayed defensively sound. And then in the second half, we raised our level and came out really strong."
It was a stagnant first half, but the Sunbirds were able to get off five total shots in the first 45 minutes, two of which were on goal thanks to
Nadia Flores and
Brooke Uceda.
The defense and goalkeeper
Monique Nevarez stood strong, giving up six shots by the Eagles but not allowing a goal, while Nevarez had three of her five saves in the period.
After going into the break tied 0-0, it didn't take long for the Sunbirds to get on the board, thanks to
Tessa Simmons, who scored her first career collegiate goal in the 46
th minute.
Nearly four minutes later, FPU doubled its lead when
Ariana Quintero scored her first goal of the season with the assist going to Simmons.
"Tessa had a fantastic showing and found her first collegiate points," Robinson added. "Overall, the energy and effort was fantastic across the board, and I'm really pleased with the team finding a way to get the result."
The Sunbirds were able to get three more shots off, with one on goal following the second goal. The defense continued to keep the Eagles off the board, as well, with Nevarez getting three more saves in the shutout.
The win extends the streak to four games, with FPU outscoring their opponents 15-2 during the streak.
The team will be back in action on Saturday when they continue the road trip at Point Loma. Kick-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
