De Leon Adds Two Points To Her Career Tally With Goal At Point Loma

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The FPU women's soccer team (5-3-2, 2-1 PacWest) dropped its first conference match of the season on Saturday, going down 3-1 to Point Loma (6-1-2, 1-0 PacWest) to close out their quick two-match road trip.

"It was a difficult match today," head coach Joel Robinson said. "First half, we were able to contain them defensively and created some good opportunities to score, but we couldn't convert. And in the second half, we made a couple of mistakes, and good teams will capitalize when you do that, and they did. But I'm really proud of the team for continuing to battle and find a goal before the end of the match."

The first half was evenly matched offensively. The Sunbirds were able to get five shots off, two of which were on goal thanks to Mackenzie Madron and Ariana Quintero, while giving up six shots, two on goal, to the Sea Lions.

After going into the break knotted at 0-0, Point Loma came out strong, taking two shots and converting on one to go up 1-0 in the 57th minute. Less than six minutes later, they were able to double their lead and go up 2-0.

The Sunbirds wouldn't go away easy, with Maiya-Ann Serrao putting two shots on frame within 35 seconds of each other, but neither was able to find the back of the net.

The Sea Lions were able to add their third goal of the game in the 82nd minute, but Tori De Leon put the Sunbirds on the board in the 88th minute for her league-leading sixth goal of the season.

The two points that came with the goal moves De Leon just one point back of a tie for third place all time in FPU history with 59 points.

The Sunbirds will be back in action next Saturday when they host Concordia Irvine. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. at Ramirez Field.
