Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

De Leon, Magnusdottir Assist Each Other In Win Over Toros

CARSON, Calif. – After back-to-back games without a goal, the FPU women's soccer team (2-2-2, 0-0 PacWest) went on the road in its final non-conference matchup of 2022 to put two on the board against CSU Dominguez Hills (0-4-2, 0-0 CCAA) in a 2-1 win.

"The game was a really great battle tonight. The effort from the team was fantastic," head coach Joel Robinson said. "We lost our focus for a little bit in the second half and good teams will capitalize on that and they scored a goal. But the team showed an excellent fight to come back and find a way to win."

After over 30 minutes of stalemate soccer, the Sunbirds broke the tie thanks to Maria Eir Magnusdottir's first goal of the season off the assist from Tori De Leon.

De Leon took the ball down the left side with plenty of green grass in ahead. Magnusdottir followed down the middle of the pitch and received the pass, making a strong move to her right and putting the ball in the net to take the 1-0 lead, which would last into the break.

Dominguez Hills was able to put one in the net to tie the game coming out of the break, and just like the first 30 minutes of the game, the two teams played strong defense to keep the game tied.

That all changed in the 69th minute when Magnusdottir sent a thru ball to De Leon, who carried it into the open field. She took on the Toro keeper one-on-one and gave the Sunbirds the 2-1 lead.

"Maria and Tori did a really good job tonight knowing where the other would be and both showed good composure to score their goals," Robinson added.

The Sunbirds had multiple chances down the stretch to extend their lead, but they didn't need them, taking the 2-1 win.

FPU will be back in action against PacWest foe Academy of Art in a non-conference matchup on Saturday at Ramirez Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
