Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Offense Rolls as Sunbirds Take Down Urban Knights

FRESNO, Calif. – The goals came out in droves at Ramirez Field on Saturday night when they FPU women's soccer team (3-2-2, 0-0 PacWest) knocked off Academy of Art (0-6, 0-0 PacWest).

The first goal came in less than six minutes into the game when Mackenzie Madron scored her first goal of 2022.

Less than 10 minutes later, Tori De Leon continued her stellar season with her third goal of the season. And before anyone could catch their breath, she added a second goal of the game, fourth of 2022) off the assist of Nadia Flores, the freshman's first career point.

De Leon's two goals gave her 54 career points, putting her six points shy of third all-time in program history.

The Sunbirds dominated possession for the entirety of the first half, taking 14 shots while holding the Urban Knights to zero.

With five minutes to go before the half, Madilyn Hernandez added to the scoresheet with her first goal of the season to make it 4-0 Sunbirds, and Flores earned her second assist of the game, alongside Diana Garcia.

"I think one of the things we've struggled with over the last four games is just finding ways to score, and so we've focused a lot on our attacking-third play," head coach Joel Robinson said. "Tonight, the movement was really good, the passing in the final third was really good, we were patient, and it got us into the right spots. If you end up in the right spot, and you've worked on it, you can put the ball away, and tonight we were able to do that."

After the break, the Sunbirds were able to make it 5-0 just 1:50 into the period. This time, Flores put one in the net herself rather than assisting on a goal, and she did it off the assist from Alena Schenk.

FPU continued to keep the ball on the Art side of the field, and they were able to capitalize one more time thanks to a goal from Bryana Yoshida, off another assist from Schenk.

It was all Sunbirds for 90 minutes, outshooting the Urban Knights 29-1 with eight corner kicks. FPU held 65 percent of the possession.

They will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host Holy Names at Ramirez Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
