FRESNO, Calif.- With a duplicate defensive performance, this time against one of the best teams in the NCAA DII West Region, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-0-1 overall) held a scoreless draw against the Chico State Wildcats (1-0-1 overall) Sunday afternoon on Ramirez Field.
Just three days after delivering a clean sheet in their first match of the season, Fresno Pacific replicated the effort as goalkeeper
Monique Nevarez tallied her 2
nd clean sheet in as many matches.
The Sunbirds came out aggressive against a team that beat them 4-1 last year, and drew a majority of the chances, while dominating 56% of the possession in the 1
st half.
FPU had a couple of chances that were deflected by a stingy Chico State back line, but kept the ball in the attacking third for a majority of the half.
Still, it was the FPU center backs that anchored the effort again as
Madilyn Hernandez and
Alena Schenk dispelled many of the Chico State build ups, even inside of the 18',
The Wildcats won more of the possession in the second half, and drew four corner kicks in the final 45 minutes, but FPU was more than up to the task.
In one of the rare instances that Chico State broke through the back line, Nevarez deflected a rebound attempt knocking the ball beyond the near post to her left and out for a CSU-Chico corner. FPU organized and quickly dispelled the chance.
Chico State continued to up the pressure on attack, but the Sunbirds were organized throughout the match and held off the final push in the last ten seconds to secure the draw.
It's a good result for Fresno Pacific as they continue to build under
Joel Robinson as they've held their opposition scoreless over the first two matches.
FPU wraps up the home stand Wednesday night as they host Stanislaus State at 7:00pm on Ramirez Field.
