FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0 PacWest) fell 4-2 to Stanislaus State (1-1-1, 0-0 CCAA) on Wednesday night in an offensive showcase by both the Sunbirds and the Warriors, but three goals from Stanislaus State in the second half put them over the edge.
FPU had the majority of the chances from the start as the Sunbirds put three shots on goal but couldn't score in the first five minutes.
Stanislaus State began asserting possession from there and the Warriors capitalized on a missed clearance in the 15th minute as Summer England ripped a shot from 20 yards out to give Stanislaus State a 1-0 lead.
Fresno Pacific found their answer as Alena Schenk dribbled two thirds of the field to force a corner and took advantage of the Warrior's attempt to clear it at the top of the box and blasted her first career goal, tying the match at 1 goal a piece.
Both teams battled for possession for the rest of the half as the game remained tied at 1-1.
FPU came out aggressive to start the second half, as Bryana Yoshida delivered a stellar goal just two minutes into the period giving the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead. Yoshida blasted a shot from the edge of the box, ripping into the back of the net for the advantage.
But the lead was short lived as Stanislaus State responded just a minute later to tie the match at 2-2.
The Warriors took the lead just eight minutes later, with a banger of their own, putting FPU in a 3-2 deficit.
The Sunbirds appeared to have an answer on one of their seven corners, when Schenk was pulled down in the box, but the no-call led to Stanislaus State swinging possession and adding an insurance goal in the 66th minute.
FPU will be back in action on Saturday in their first road game of the season at Cal State San Bernardino at 9:30 a.m.
