Sunbirds Score Four In Win Over Sharks

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The FPU women's soccer team (7-5-2, 4-3 PacWest) scored four goals in the second half against Hawaii Pacific (3-5-3, 2-2-1 PacWest) on Friday, getting the 4-1 win to close out their time in Hawaii.

"I'm really proud of how the team came out tonight," head coach Joel Robinson said. "We have struggled on this trip, and the desire and effort was phenomenal. We did a really good job of imposing our will in the match, and the second half really showed how good we can be."

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team gaining an edge before the Sharks were able to get on the board in the 36th minute.

After trailing 1-0 at the break, it didn't take long for the Sunbirds to get the all-important equalizer in the second half when Diana Garcia scored in the 48th minute.

That opened the offensive floodgates for FPU, because just 19 seconds later, Maluhia Kekuawela received a pass from Nadia Flores and was able to put it in the back of the net to give the Sunbirds the 2-1 lead.

The Sunbirds continued to dominate, putting up two more shots before Tessa Simmons extended the lead to 3-1 in the 59th minute off the assist from Brooke Uceda.

After another shot on goal from Simmons, as well as a shot from Maria Eir Magnusdottir that struck the woodwork in the 78th minute, Tori De Leon added a fourth FPU goal in the 83rd minute to continue her stellar senior campaign, putting the game out of reach and giving the Sunbirds three points to close out their Hawaii road trip.

FPU will return home for their final three games of the season, starting with Academy of Art on Thursday. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Ramirez Field.
