Late Goal Edges Sunbirds Over Golden Eagles

FRESNO, Calif. – Late-game heroics from senior Tori De Leon was the difference on Saturday afternoon when the FPU women's soccer team (6-3-2, 3-1 PacWest) knocked off Concordia-Irvine (6-3-2, 1-1-1 PacWest) 2-1 to earn its ninth point in conference play.

Both teams were able to put a shot on goal within the first 5:30 of the contest, and De Leon added a second in the 17th minute, but it was the Golden Eagles who got on the board first after a free kick found the back of the net in the 21st minute.

Maira Eir Magnusdottir was able to put a shot on goal in the 36th minute that was saved, and two key saves from Monique Nevarez kept the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

The Sunbirds came out hot to start the second half, with three shots in the first 15 minutes, including one on goal from Brooke Uceda. But FPU was finally able to break through in the 66th minute when Bryana Yoshida put one in the net off an assist from Magnusdottir and Uceda to tie the game 1-1.

Both teams kept going back and forth with Nevarez coming out with another massive save in the 74th minute to keep the contest level at 1-1.

With a draw and just one point looming, De Leon was able to move into third place alone in career points at FPU in dramatic fashion when the senior netted her seventh goal of the season in the 88th minute off the assist from Ariana Quintero to give the Sunbirds the lead and the win.

"I think the first 10 minutes of the first half, we were playing well, we were doing the things that we wanted to execute. And then after the goal, we kind of let down a little bit," head coach Joel Robinson said. "We gave the team a quick halftime talk and mostly just left it up to the players and said it's their decision to go out and play this game, and they did."

The win gives the Sunbirds nine points on the season in conference play, putting them alone at the top of the standings.

FPU will start its Hawaii trip next week against Hawaii Hilo next Saturday. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
