FRESNO, Calif. – On a night where the Sunbirds were short-handed, FPU fell 93-82 to Dominican on Friday night to kick off a three-game homestand after an incredible third-quarter rally.
QUOTABLE
"I was proud of the eight players that we had play tonight. I thought they showed a lot of heart and fight. As shorthanded as we were, they battled back and put a lot of pressure on Dominican in the second half. We'd like to have a couple of stretches of play back, but all in all, I thought it was a gritty display from our team. This year has been incredibly challenging in so many ways, but watching our team fight alongside each other through it all is a gift. They show their love for one another with the effort they put forth each day, and tonight was no different. We are excited about finding a rhythm of consistency in games and practices while we continue to chase the best version of ourselves daily. No flinch." – head coach Tim Beauregard
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams traded buckets early, but the Sunbirds were able to grab a quick 6-3 lead thanks to free throws from Joleen Corona, a jump shot from Anisa Rillo and a layup from Maesyn Rix.
- The Penguins quickly turned that into a lead of their own after an 8-0 run gave them an 11-6 advantage.
- FPU kept the deficit to single digits until a 9-2 run gave Dominican a 28-18 lead after the first quarter.
- The Penguins led by as many as 21 points in the second quarter, taking that lead into halftime.
- Dominican came out in the second half, hovering with a 20-23 point lead to start.
- The Sunbirds went on a 14-2 run in the third quarter that spanned over four minutes to gut the 23-point DUC lead to just nine points.
- An FPU turnover led to an and-1 opportunity for the Penguins that stretched their lead back to 12 after the long run by the Sunbirds, and Dominican took a 12-point lead into the final period.
- The Penguins led by 20 with five minutes to go in the game, but a 9-0 run by the Sunbirds, sparked by a Corona 3-pointer with 4:06 left, cut into that lead, and FPU trailed by 11 with 3:07 left in the contest.
- The two teams traded buckets in the last three minutes, and the Penguins would hold on to the lead and take the 11-point win.
