Sunbirds Earn Another Split with PLNU, Host CUI on Thursday

SAN DIEGO – The Fresno Pacific baseball team made the trip south to visit Point Loma on Saturday, taking the opener of a doubleheader by a final of 5-3 before dropping the series finale 5-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jared Aguilar started the scoring with a sac fly in the first, and a throwing error helped the Blue and Orange push the lead to 2-0 an inning later.
  • Designated hitter Justin Ledgerwood came up big for the Sea Lions, singling in a run in the second inning before launching a solo shot to right to tie the game in the home fourth.
  • Andrue Lackey belted an opposite-field homer to put FPU back on top in the sixth, and first baseman Matt McGrady added two insurance runs with a bases-loaded single just before the stretch.
  • Point Loma scratched across a run in the bottom half to make it a 5-3 game but would get no closer in Saturday's opener.
  • The nightcap saw the home team jump out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth and never look back, adding the final tally of the day on a solo dinger in the fifth.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • McGrady and Lackey combined for four of FPU's seven hits in Game 1, while leadoff man Michael Warkentin added an extra-base hit.
  • Starting pitcher Garrett Cooper struck out eight Sea Lions over 6.2 innings of work, while Justin Fuson and Matt Stearns combined to pick up the final seven outs without allowing a run.
  • Chase Pinheiro picked up a multi-hit performance in the series finale to highlight a slow game for the Sunbirds.
  • The bullpen again proved strong, with Nic Boatman and Brady Crow combining to allow just two hits over the final 2.2 innings on the mound.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Saturday was FPU's first trip to San Diego since 2018, and the win in Game 1 snapped a nine-game road losing skid against the Sea Lions.
  • Jack Foote has reached base in seven straight games for the Sunbirds.
  • FPU has now totaled 81 multi-hit performances this season.
  • Stearns becomes the fourth FPU pitcher to pick up a save this year.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds are set to host Concordia Irvine for the final two home games of the year on Thursday, with Senior Day festivities taking place prior to the game. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from FPU Diamond.
