‘Birds Split on Senior Day, Head to Irvine for Final Games of 2021

FRESNO, Calif. – The FPU baseball team split its' fourth straight doubleheader on Thursday, falling 16-3 in the opener against Concordia before picking up a 12-7 victory in the final home game of the year. In between games, the Sunbirds celebrated the 2021 senior class, which included outfielders Nick Dodd, Michael Warkentin and Haden Haynes, infielder Bodie Vegely, catcher Angel Flores, and pitchers Nic Boatman, Esteban Lizaola, and Tyler Rumbaugh.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Concordia scored 11 runs over the third and fourth innings before FPU was finally able to get on the board with two runs in the home fourth.
  • The Eagles stayed in their offensive rhythm, picking up five more runs before the game ended.
  • CUI went back to work early in Game 2, plating two runs in the first inning on a double from first baseman Bailey Collins.
  • Vegely singled up the middle to start the scoring for FPU in the bottom of the second, and a Jack Foote double down the left field line gave the Blue and Orange their first lead of the day.
  • First baseman Matt McGrady hammered a three-run shot well over the right field wall in the third to push the lead to 6-2, and Foote and Cooper both added an RBI single in the same frame.
  • Concordia scratched across an unearned run in the fifth, but hits from Cooper, Jared Aguilar, and McGrady helped FPU open it up to a 12-3 lead.
  • The Eagles tried to chip away late in the game but the comeback attempt was cut short in the seventh inning.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Flores and Garrett Cooper each turned in a multi-hit performance in Game 1, combining for four of FPU's seven hits.
  • Joey Ochoa was the lone Sunbird arm to record a scoreless outing on the mound in the opener, overcoming a one-out infield single.
  • Cooper, Vegely and McGrady teamed up for 10 hits and seven RBI in the nightcap to lead the offense, while Foote added three RBI of his own.
  • Rumbaugh pitched into the sixth inning and induced seven groundouts before giving way to fellow southpaw Michael Barker for the final five outs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • McGrady's homer was his team-leading sixth of the season, and he now has seven multi-RBI games this season.
  • Cooper went without an extra-base hit for the first 36 games of the year before belting out four doubles on Thursday.
  • Jack Foote leads the team with a ten-game hitting streak, the longest of his career to date.
  • Rumbaugh has pitched five or more innings in each of his last four outings.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds and Eagles are set to wrap up the series and the season on Saturday with a twin bill in Irvine. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
