Offense Comes Alive to Help ‘Birds Split Twin Bill with Point Loma

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team split a doubleheader at FPU Diamond on Thursday, falling 14-3 in the opener against Point Loma before taking the nightcap by a final of 13-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Point Loma wasted little time in Game 1, erupting for 14 runs over the first four innings of the game.
  • After a leadoff single from Garrett Cooper, Bodie Vegely and Mitch Silvas hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth to provide all the offense for the Sunbirds.
  • The Sea Lions got on the board first with a third-inning solo shot from Otto Kemp, but the home team got it back with an RBI single off the bat of Jared Aguilar in the bottom half.
  • Matt McGrady come on as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded in the fourth, taking the team lead in homers with a monster grand slam to put FPU in front 5-1.
  • The Blue and Orange came away with six more runs on six base hits in the following inning to break it all the way open and extend the lead to 11-1.
  • Garrett Santos added a two-RBI single in the home sixth to make it a 12-run game.
  • Point Loma plated three runs in the final inning but were unable to chip away any further.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Cooper was the lone FPU hitter with a multi-hit performance in Thursday's opener, though seven different Sunbirds reached with a hit.
  • The back end of the bullpen had a nice afternoon for FPU, as Ethan Wenter, Nick Falco and Nicholas Schoonover combined for five innings and just one run.
  • Starter Tyler Rumbaugh turned in another strong outing in his second start of the year, pitching into the seventh inning before giving way to the bullpen.
  • The Sunbird offense belted out 15 hits in the win, batting around in both the fifth and sixth innings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Rumbaugh has pitched six or more innings in each of his last three outings.
  • FPU ranks second in the PacWest with 220 total runs this season, an average of 6.47 runs per game.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds and Sea Lions are set to wrap up the series on Saturday from America's Most Scenic Ballpark in San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., and per PacWest Conference protocols, visiting fans will not be permitted, though live stats and video stream will be available.
