Sunbirds’ Season Comes to an End in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team played the final doubleheader of the 2021 season on Saturday, falling 15-2 in the opener against Concordia before dropping the season finale by a final of 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Concordia offense had a steady attack, scoring 10 runs over the first three innings before adding another four-spot in the seventh.
  • Jack Foote plated the first run of the day for the Sunbirds in the top of the sixth, with the only other run coming in to score on an Eagle error two innings later.
  • CUI went right back to work in Game 2, scratching across a run in each of the first two innings.
  • Foote left the yard for the first time this year to get the 'Birds on the board in the third, and four batters later, Matt McGrady beat out an infield single to give FPU its' first lead of the day.
  • The Eagles tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third before a failed pickoff attempt allowed them to regain the lead in the home fourth.
  • Foote provided the heroics for FPU yet again, driving in the tying run in the top of the sixth, only to see Concordia bring home the eventual winning run with a sac fly in the next half inning.

STATS FROM THE DAY
  • Six different FPU players picked up a base hit in the opener.
  • Nick Dodd was the only Sunbird with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in Game 2.
  • Esteban Lizaola punched out seven batters in his final collegiate start before Matt Stearns picked up the final two outs of the season on just four pitches.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Foote closes out the year with a 12-game hitting streak intact, the longest of any FPU hitter this spring.
  • His homer makes him the 13th FPU player to go deep this season, while McGrady leads the team with six.
  • Lizaola finishes his career with 190 career strikeouts, passing fellow right hander Matt Mazzoni for fourth on the program's career list.
