ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team claimed its' fourth straight victory on Thursday, defeating Holy Names in a road twin bill by scores of 7-5 and 8-3. Senior pitcher
Nic Boatman set the program record for strikeouts in the nightcap, picking up the 215
th of his career in the third inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jared Aguilar started the scoring in the third, driving home two runs while beating out an infield single.
- A sac fly got the Hawks in the board in the bottom half, but the Sunbirds put up three runs in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game.
- Holy Names again answered, getting two runs back in the home half of the frame.
- Just before the stretch, Andrue Lackey doubled home Gavin Vangronigen, and Jack Foote's sac fly again gave the Blue and Orange a four-run lead.
- The home team scratched across a pair of runs in the final inning to make it close, but FPU extended its' win streak to three games.
- An error allowed the Sunbirds to strike first in Game 2, but a pair of Holy Names homers put FPU down early.
- Matt McGrady belted a two-run shot in the second to put the Blue and Orange in front 3-2, and a Lackey single in the third pushed FPU's lead to two runs.
- The Hawks hit their third long ball of the game to pull within one in the fourth, and the two teams exchanged zeroes until the seventh.
- Fresno Pacific combined a key hit with three free passes and a pair of HNU errors in the seventh to score four insurance runs.
STATS FROM THE DAY:
- Sunbird starter Justin Fuson allowed just one hit over four innings but struggled with his command, giving way to the bullpen with two runners aboard in the home fifth.
- Esteban Lizaola went the rest of the way on the mound for FPU in the opener, fanning six hawks over the final five chapters to pick up the victory.
- Lackey provided a three-hit game to lead the way for the 'Birds in Game 1, while Aguilar was credited with a trio of RBI.
- Boatman's five strikeouts over three innings highlighted his performance, with southpaw Tyler Rumbaugh tossing the final four frames to earn the win.
- Lackey, Gavin Vangronigen and Garrett Cooper each turned in two hits in Thursday's finale.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Lizaola's appearance on the mound was his first since FPU's opening series of the season, and he has now picked up at least six strikeouts in his last three outings dating back to Feb. 8, 2020.
- Boatman passed Wilson Ashford (2012-15) to take over the top spot on FPU's all-time leaderboard after passing Josh Medeles (2012-16) earlier this spring.
- Cooper has now reached base safely in 11 straight games, the highest mark of any Sunbird hitter this season.
- FPU's four-game win streak is the team's longest of the season and the sixth of at least that many games since the start of the 2018 campaign.
