Sunbird Baseball Plays 24 Innings, Splits Conference Doubleheader with Hawks

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team hosted Holy Names on Saturday, falling 3-1 in extra innings of the doubleheader opener before walking it off with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. The Sunbirds took the series three games to one and have more total wins than anyone else in the PacWest's NorCal Pod.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jared Aguilar singled in a run in the home third to open the scoring, but the Hawks took advantage of an error in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1.
  • A two-run home run off the bat of Morgan McIntosh carried over the left field wall in the top of the 13th to give HNU a 3-1 edge.
  • Aguilar plated a run in the first inning of Game 2 to give FPU an early lead, but Holy Names answered with a three-run second frame.
  • With two outs and runners at the corners, Isaac Gonzalez beat out a bunt single to plate Michael Warkentin and cut the deficit to one run.
  • Nick Dodd singled to center in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but the Sunbirds were unable to bring in the winning run and went to extras for the second time on the day.
  • A wild pitch allowed Holy Names to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th.
  • Trent Greene walked to open the bottom of the inning, and Chase Pinheiro's sac bunt moved him into scoring position.
  • Jack Foote drew a walk that prompted an HNU mound visit, and Warkentin smashed a double to the gap in left-center to plate both Greene and Foote for the win.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Sunbird starter Michael Barker turned in a strong outing on the mound in the opener, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings while fanning nine.
  • Matt Stearns was hit with the loss after six innings of relief work, surrendering one earned run.
  • Designated hitter Matt McGrady was the lone Sunbird hitter with a multi-hit performance in Game 1.
  • Warkentin went 4-for-6 at the plate in the finale, while Dodd and Gonzalez each added a pair of base knocks.
  • Garrett Cooper settled in nicely after the second inning, picking up another seven strikeouts with no HNU player getting past second base over the next five frames.
  • The Sunbird bullpen was effective, with Gio Helmuth, Tyler Parker, Brady Crow and Justin Fuson allowing just three hits and one run over the final four innings.
  • Fuson, who started the opener of Thursday's twin bill in Alameda, picked up the win after recording the final two outs of Saturday's series finale.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Cooper totaled 10 strikeouts to match his career-high, which was previously set on March 8 of this season against Academy of Art.
  • Warkentin's walkoff gave the Sunbirds their first victory in extra-inning games this season.
  • Warkentin becomes the third FPU hitter this year with a four-hit game, joining Aguilar and Dodd.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds return to action on Thursday, when they welcome Academy of Art to FPU Diamond for another PacWest Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
