Rumbaugh’s Strong Outing Helps ‘Birds Salvage Split

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team picked up a doubleheader split on Thursday, dropping the opener 8-4 before picking up a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. Senior Tyler Rumbaugh turned in a strong outing in the nightcap, providing seven innings of relief work without allowing a run to keep Academy of Art at bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Vincent Lontz hit a solo shot to right to start the scoring in the second inning of the opener, and Dominic Ruggiero made it a 2-0 Academy of Art lead with a single in the following frame.
  • Nick Dodd got the Sunbirds on the board in the home half, singling down the left field line to plate Michael Warkentin from second.
  • A sac fly off the bat of Jared Aguilar tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning.
  • The Urban Knights scratched across two runs in the sixth to regain the lead before adding two more just before the stretch.
  • Gavin Vangronigen picked up an RBI to cut into the deficit in the home eighth, but Academy of Art answered with another two runs in the top of the ninth.
  • The Sunbirds brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning but were forced to settle for just one run.
  • Three Academy of Art runs came in to score before the Sunbirds recorded an out in Game 2, but Rumbaugh was on cruise control for the duration of the night.
  • FPU got a run back in the home first with a single from Garrett Cooper, and the Sunbirds tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth.
  • A wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh allowed Garret Santos to cross the plate, giving the Blue and Orange their second walkoff in their last three games.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Isaac Gonzalez and Garrett Cooper each picked up two hits in Game 1, while Warkentin and Jack Foote each drew a pair of walks.
  • Starting pitcher Justin Fuson surrendered just one earned run over six frames before giving way to Esteban Lizaola for the final three innings.
  • Lizaola allowed just one hit and one earned run, picking up three strikeouts along the way.
  • Cooper was the only Sunbird with a multi-hit performance in Thursday's finale.
  • Rumbaugh needed just 75 pitches to pick up his second win of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Rumbaugh has not lost a game since the 2018 season, and he dropped his season ERA more than a point and a half on Thursday.
  • FPU has won six of their last eight games and sits a game back of first place in the PacWest NorCal Pod.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds and Urban Knights wrap up the series on Saturday with another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Alameda.
