Sunbird Baseball Concludes First PacWest Series

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team split a doubleheader against Academy of Art on Monday, taking the opener 14-7 before falling 3-2 in extras of the series finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A bases-loaded walk in the second inning helped FPU get on the board first, and Andrue Lackey crushed his third home run of the year in the third to make it a 3-0 game.
  • Jack Foote plated Garrett Cooper from second with an RBI single to left in the fourth, and the 'Birds broke it open with a four-run fifth frame.
  • Jared Aguilar belted another long ball for the Blue and Orange in the sixth, and after back-to-back 2-run innings, Chase Pinheiro cranked his first career homer in the top half of the ninth.
  • Academy of Art got all seven runs over the final three innings, but the FPU offense proved too strong to overcome.
  • Each team scratched across a run in the first inning of Game 4, and Matt McGrady brought home Michael Warkentin in the third to give FPU a 2-1 lead.
  • ART U scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh when Justin Summer took a 3-1 pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Andrew Shebloski singled on the first pitch he saw in the home eighth, scoring reigning NorCal Player of the Week Adam Inouye as the winning run.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Lackey, Aguilar and Michael Warkentin each drove in three runs for the Sunbirds, while Foote plated four in the opener.
  • Aguilar went 4-for-6 at the dish, marking his first four-hit game of the season.
  • Nic Boatman earned the win in his first start this spring, fanning seven Urban Knights over six innings.
  • McGrady, Warkentin and Foote provided all six FPU hits in the nightcap.
  • Cooper whiffed 10 over 5.1 innings of work but ultimately was unable to pick up a decision.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Lackey and McGrady both have three multi-hit games so far this season, with the latter the only Sunbird to reach base in all eight.
  • Cooper's 10 strikeouts is a new career-high, and he is now the team leader in that category on the season.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds turn their attention to a four-game series against perennial West Region power Azusa Pacific, with the first two coming at FPU Diamond on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., with live stats and video streaming available free of charge at FPUAthletics.com.
