Nationally-Ranked Cougars Take Two From Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – The FPU baseball team hosted Azusa Pacific on Thursday, falling in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 1-0 and 13-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The winning run in the opener came on an infield single in the eighth inning, when Nick Estrella plated Osvaldo Tovalin to give the Cougars all the offense they would need.
  • APU went right back to work in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the first and third innings before making it a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
  • Nick Dodd's RBI groundout in the home fifth brought in FPU's lone run of the day.
  • The top of the sixth got away from the home team, as the Brick and Black plated five runs to break it open.
  • The Cougars added three more in the final inning of the day to leave Fresno with a pair of victories.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Righthander Justin Fuson twirled a gem to open the series, striking out ten Cougar hitters over 7.2 innings of work.
  • Michael Barker tossed the final four outs out of the Sunbird bullpen, overcoming a hit and a walk along the way.
  • Shortstop Garrett Cooper posted a three-hit day in the first game of the day, his first such performance of the season.
  • FPU scattered just four hits in Thursday's Game Two, with Dodd joining Andrue Lackey, Trent Greene and Angel Flores to provide all of the offense.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Cooper is one of five Sunbird hitters to have at least three hits in a game so far this year.
  • Fuson is now second in the PacWest Conference in strikeouts with 19.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds and Cougars wrap up the series in Southern California on Saturday with another twin bill. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
