Sunbirds Drop First Two PacWest Games

FRESNO, Calif. – The FPU baseball team opened PacWest Conference action on Saturday, falling 12-0 and 9-3 at the hands of Academy of Art.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Urban Knights scratched across three runs in three different innings of the opener, while the Sunbirds mustered just three hits.
  • FPU saw their first offense of the series come in the fifth inning of the nightcap, when Matt McGrady doubled in a pair to cut into a 7-0 ART U lead.
  • Michael Warkentin was hit with a pitch in the home sixth to plate the Sunbirds' final run of the night.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Matthew Sanchez earned the victory in Game 1, tossing eight innings of scoreless work before giving way to Joel Mitchell to finish it off.
  • Jayson Summers followed with 115 pitches over 5.2 innings in the back end to earn his first win of the year.
  • McGrady was credited with a two-hit game in the nightcap, and he becomes the third Sunbird hitter to reach seven RBI so far this season.
  • Saturday proved to be an awful day for the Sunbird defense, as the home nine combined for seven errors over 16 innings in the field.
