‘Birds Impress in Doubleheader Sweep of ARTU

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team hosted Academy of Art for a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Saturday, taking the opener 11-3 before finishing off the day with a 7-1 win.

QUOTABLE:
  • "It was nice to get on the right side of the win-loss column. Our guys have been working hard, and it was refreshing to see the fruits of their labor pay off. We got back to basics, and it worked out well for us. Today was big because it gives a chance in the pod as the season progresses. We get next week off, and that will give us some time to recover. I like where we are and our guys' mentality, but we have to keep pushing." – head coach Oscar Hirschkorn

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jared Aguilar started the scoring with a sac fly in the first inning, marking the only run of the first three innings for either side.
  • The Urban Knights tied the game in the top of the fourth, but Angel Flores singled up the middle in the home half to put the Blue and Orange back on top.
  • Two Sunbirds came in to score in the fifth to make it a 4-1 Sunbird lead.
  • Academy of Art got a solo shot from Dominic Ruggiero in the sixth, and Hayato Niki singled home a run to bring the Urban Knights within one.
  • The Urban Knights struggled to find the zone following the stretch, and FPU took advantage with a four-run outburst.
  • Brian Hefner came off the bench and launched a three-run homer in the home half of the eighth, giving the Sunbirds an 11-3 advantage.
  • In Game 2, Aguilar again got the Blue and Orange off and running in the first inning singling to center to plate Chase Pinheiro for the first lead of the game.
  • A fielder's choice and a throwing error gave FPU a 3-0 lead before the first frame came to a close.
  • Pinheiro sacrificed a run home in the second to make it 4-0, and ARTU's Ty Conrad followed suit in the top of the third to get the Urban Knights on the board.
  • Nick Dodd, Isaac Gonzalez and Aguilar came up with run-scoring hits in the fourth, allowing the home nine to push the lead to 7-1.
