Sunbirds Drop Two in Alameda

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team hit the road on Thursday, falling 11-4 to Academy of Art in the opener of a doubleheader before dropping the nightcap 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After four innings of swapping zeroes, the Urban Knights broke through with two runs in the home fourth.
  • Andrue Lackey singled home Isaac Gonzalez in the top of the fifth to get the Sunbirds on the board, but Academy of Art plated another run in the sixth to make it a 3-1 game.
  • Gonzalez launched the first home run of his college career to open the seventh and again bring the Blue and Orange within one.
  • The wheels fell all the way off for FPU following the stretch, as the Urban Knights turned in a monster eight-run inning.
  • Garrett Cooper and Jared Aguilar each drove in a run for the 'Birds in the eighth, but the home nine ensured the comeback attempt was brief.
  • The Sunbirds scored on a fielding error in the second inning of Game 2, but the Urban Knights answered with the equalizer in the home half.
  • The rest of the offense came in the bottom of the sixth, when Academy of Art added three runs to give Jayson Summers all the support he needed for the win.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Justin Fuson was hit with his third loss of the season after allowing three earned runs over 5.2 innings.
  • Aguilar was responsible for the rest of the Urban Knight runs, though only two were earned.
  • FPU mustered just four hits in Thursday's finale, though two went for doubles off the bats off Gonzalez and Brian Hefner
  • Brady Crow was a bright spot out of the Sunbird bullpen, overcoming two hits to record a scoreless outing.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Nic Boatman is just four strikeouts away from tying the program record for strikeouts, which is currently held by Wilson Ashford (2012-15).
  • Gonzalez was the tenth Sunbird hitter to leave the yard this season.

UP NEXT:
  • FPU and Academy of Art are set to wrap up the series on Saturday, when the Urban Knights make the return trip to Fresno. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
