Sunbirds Fall Short at Dominican to Close Out Road Trip

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Sunbirds closed out their PacWest Conference road trip on Saturday with a 73-67 loss to Dominican, despite a 20-7 run to close out the game.

QUOTABLE

"Dominican executed a game plan that took us out of what we do best. They out-toughed us for most of the game, and we did not impose our will until it was too late. Ultimately, I have to figure out a way to get more out of our group and find a way to put them in better positions to succeed. We played unconnected and uninspired today, and until we figure some things out, we will continue to fall short as a staff and as a team. We have another stretch of practices and another game at the end of next week. We will focus heavily on growth and toughness this next stretch of practices and hope to be a better version of ourselves Friday against Chaminade." – head coach Tim Beauregard

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams traded buckets to start the contest before Dominican went on a 10-2 run to close out the opening period and take a 20-13 lead.
  • The Penguins were able to stretch their lead to nine to open the second quarter, but a 3-pointer from Felicia Dourva cut the deficit to six points just under a minute into the period.
  • The two teams continued to trade buckets for the remainder of the half, and Dominican was able to take a 37-30 lead into the break.
  • The Penguins came out of the half and opened it up with a 14-4 run to take a 17-point lead.
  • A pair of free throws from Julie Ramirez and layups from Breanna Hurt and Jenna Kurz cut the Dominican lead to 11, but the Sunbirds trailed by 15 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Sunbirds trailed by as many as 18 three times in the final quarter, but a jumper from Hurt with 3:55 left in the contest sparked an 18-6 FPU run to close out the game.
  • Another Hurt jumper with 1:47 left got the Sunbirds to within single digits, followed by a layup from Dourva with 1:27 to go to make it a seven-point game.
  • Dourva was able to knock down a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go while trailing by nine to cut the lead to six. But the Penguins were able to hang on to their slight lead to get the win.
