Big Ninth Helps Sunbirds Split First Day of League Action

IRVINE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team opened PacWest Conference action on Friday, dropping the opener of a doubleheader 8-1 against Concordia before taking the nightcap 8-4.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Game 1 
  • The Eagles struck for four runs in the second inning with the help of an error in the Sunbird outfield.
  • Two more Concordia runs came in to score in the fifth to make it 6-0, and Jared Aguilar drove in FPU's lone run of the day with a sac fly just before the stretch.
  • The Eagle answered with two more runs in the home half of the seventh to push the lead to 8-1.
 
Game 2 
  • The Blue and Orange started the scoring in the first inning with a successful double steal, with Andrue Lackey taking second and Hefner swiping home.
  • Concordia retook the lead in the second, but Brian Hefner singled home a run to tie the game in the fifth inning.
  • The Eagles moves in front 4-2 in the home half after a two-RBI double off the bat of Phillip Quartararo, and the Sunbirds got back within a run after a Trent Greene single in the sixth. 
  • With one away in the top of the ninth, Michael Warkentin, Nick Dodd, and Hefner gave the 'Birds three straight singles, and Andrue Lackey was intentionally walked to bring Aguilar to the plate. 
  • Aguilar followed with a two-RBI single to give FPU a 6-4 lead, and two batters later, Dylan Lewis broke it open with a double to center.
  • The Eagles got a leadoff single in the ninth, but a flyout and a game-ending double play helped the Sunbirds pick up their first conference win of the season.
 
STATS FROM THE DAY: 
  • Warkentin, Hefner and Jack Foote each had two hits in the opener, with Hefner recording FPU's lone extra base hit of the game.
  • Nic Boatman took the loss after allowing two earned runs over 4.2 innings, while Concordia's Brett Vansant picked up his third win.
  • Starting pitcher Justin Fuson gave FPU seven innings and fanned nine hitters in the nightcap before reliever Tyler Rumbaugh picked up his fourth win after facing the minimum over the final two stanzas. 
  • Dodd and Hefner combined for six hits, while Hefner, Aguilar and Lewis totaled six RBI.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • The Sunbirds have already stolen 42 bases in just 20 games after swiping 48 bags in 45 games last season.
  • Lackey has reached base successfully in every game so far this spring.
  • Rumbaugh and Fuson are tied for the team lead in wins at four apiece.
