FPU Wins Series with Doubleheader Split against Hawks

OAKLAND, Calif. – Entering the day with a 2-0 series lead, the FPU baseball team won the opener of a twin bill 11-4 over Holy Names on Saturday, but the Hawks came back to walk off in extra innings in the series finale. The Sunbirds are now 2-1-1 in weekend series so far this season.  
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Game 1 
  • Jack Foote singled in the first run of the game in FPU's half of the second, but the Hawks answered with two runs the following inning.
  • The Sunbirds went right back to work in the fourth, with Nick Dodd and Foote combining to drive in three runs and put FPU back in front.
  • Foote picked up his third RBI hit in as many at bats in the fifth, and Dodd singled to center in the seventh to make it 6-2.
  • HNU got two back after the stretch, but four Sunbirds came in to score in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
  • Garrett Cooper plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth, and FPU clinched a series victory.
 
Game 2 
  • The Sunbirds again struck first in the nightcap, with Foote coming in to score on a passed ball in the second inning.
  • The third frame got away from FPU, as HNU scored four runs on three base hits.
  • Brian Hefner doubled home two runs in the top of the fifth to bring FPU within one, and Bodie Vegely's RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh was enough to send the game to extras. 
  • With two outs and runners at second and third in the bottom of the eighth, HNU first baseman Tyler Georgeson singled to win the game.
 
STATS FROM THE DAY: 
  • Dodd, Michael Warkentin, Angel Flores, Jared Aguilar and Brian Hefner were each credited with two base hits in the opener, while Foote turned in the biggest game of his young career with four knocks.  
  • Matt Stearns picked up his first win of the year for the Blue and Orange after allowing four runs and picking up six strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Brady Crow tossed the final 2.1 frames, whiffing two and holding the Hawks scoreless. 
  • Cooper was tagged for four runs as the starting pitcher in the finale despite seven strikeouts, but reliever Josh Acosta was hit with the loss.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Andrue Lackey has reached base in all 14 games this season, and he remains FPU's leading hitter with a .340 clip.
  • The Sunbirds have now swiped 32 bags through 14 games.

  • FPU returns home for next week's series against Academy of Art, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday night. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. from FPU Diamond.
