Sunbirds Take Double Dip from Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team swept a doubleheader against Holy Names on Friday, taking the opener 5-2 in extra innings before winning the nightcap 5-3. FPU is now guaranteed at least a split for the third time in the first four series of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Game 1 
  • Brian Hefner opened the second inning with an opposite-field single, and Angel Flores followed with a two-run shot over the wall in right to give the Sunbirds an early lead.
  • A pair of two-out hits helped the Hawks get on the scoreboard with a lone tally in the fourth, and a sac fly tied the game in the home eighth.
  • Flores came up with the biggest at bat of the game in the tenth inning, delivering a single to left with the bases loaded to put FPU in front 4-2.
  • Nick Dodd followed with an RBI single of his own to bring in the final run of the game, and Holy Names was unable to inch any closer despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the frame. 
 
Game 2 
  • Holy Names struck first with a single off the bat of Joshua Nelson in the first inning, but FPU successfully executed a double steal to tie the game in the second. 
  • The Hawks retook the lead in the home half, only to see three Sunbird runs come across in the fourth behind base hits from Jared Aguilar, Nick Dodd and Michael Warkentin
  • Jack Foote singled through the right side in the top of the sixth to put the Sunbirds in front 5-2, and the final run of the game came in to score in the bottom half of the inning. 
 
STATS FROM THE DAY: 
  • FPU starting pitcher Nic Boatman went eight innings and scattered six hits while picking up three strikeouts in the opener.
  • Tyler Rumbaugh pitched two scoreless innings to earn his third win of the year out of the Sunbird bullpen.
  • Justin Fuson picked up the win for the Blue and Orange in the nightcap, fanning ten Hawks while surrendering three runs over six frames.
  • Michael Barker whiffed eight over the final three stanzas en route to his first save in a Sunbird uniform.
  • Five Sunbirds turned in a multi-hit game in the opener, with Nick Dodd doing so again in the nightcap. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Andrue Lackey has reached base in all 12 games this season, and he remains FPU's leading hitter with a .378 clip.
  • The Sunbirds were held without a steal for the first time this spring in Friday's first game before picking up three in the back end of the doubleheader.

  • FPU and Holy Names are set to wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon with another twin bill in Oakland. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m, with the nightcap slated for seven innings.
