Western Oregon Takes Finale, ‘Birds Settle for Split

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team was tripped up on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-3 in the back end of a four-game set against Western Oregon.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS: 
  • Final: WOU 9, FPU 3  
  • Records: FPU (4-6), WOU (2-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Preseason All-American Connor McCord doubled off the right field wall to open the second and came around to score to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead on a safety squeeze. 
  • WOU shortstop Mitchell Hulse hit his first homer of the year an inning later, a solo shot to dead center.
  • The wheels came off for the Sunbirds in the seventh, as a pair of errors helped the Wolves take an 8-0 lead.
  • FPU picked up its' first hit since the first inning in the bottom of the seventh, and a total of three runs came across for the Blue and Orange behind a bases-loaded walk to Garret Santos and a 2-RBI single from Michael Warkentin
  • McCord continued his big series with triple to begin the ninth, and he came in to score the game's final run two batters later.   
 
STATS FROM THE DAY: 
  • FPU starter Garrett Cooper gave the Sunbirds six innings, allowing two runs on five base hits.
  • Josh Acosta was on the wrong end of the Wolves' big seventh frame, though none of the six were earned.
  • Jared Aguilar made his 2020 debut on the mound after starting the game at third base, and he was able to record the final seven outs of the day.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Warkentin turned in his second multi-RBI game of the young season while extending his hitting streak to five games.
  • The Sunbird offense totaled 17 runs on 24 hits and added 11 stolen bases for the series, while the pitching staff gave up no more than three earned runs in each of the four games.

  • FPU hits the road next week, opening a four-game set against Holy Names in Oakland. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
