Strong Pitching Leads Birds to Doubleheader Sweep, Series Win

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team wrapped up a PacWest Conference series on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Holy Names to win the weekend three games to one. Entering a 12-game home stand, the Sunbirds have now won five of their last seven games. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Angel Flores opened Saturday's scoring with a solo shot to right field in the third inning, and the Sunbirds pushed the lead to four behind RBI hits from Nick Dodd and Tristen Alvarez an inning later.     
• Holy Names got on the board in the home sixth when William Ruiz' RBI groundout plated Drew Gwerder from third. 
• Matt McGrady doubled home a pair to help FPU break it open in the eight before trotting in to score on a wild pitch to give the Blue and Orange a 7-1 lead.  
• The Hawks answered with a big inning of their own in the home half, as three hits brought HNU back within two.
• Bodie Vegely came off the bench and picked up one of the biggest hits of the series, singling in two insurance runs in the top of the ninth.  
• A third-inning sac fly in the third inning of the nightcap gave Holy Names its' final lead of the series, as the Sunbirds plated two in the fifth to take the lead for good. 
• Garrett Cooper added an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth, and Brian Hefner doubled in the final run of the series in the seventh.
 
STATS FROM THE DAY
• Esteban Lizaola gave the Sunbirds seven innings on the mound, allowing four runs and whiffing six Hawk hitters along the way.
• Cooper came on from right field to pick up the final six outs of the game and his sixth save of the season.    
• Tyler Rumbaugh turned in a complete game in his first start of the season, scattering four hits over seven innings while striking out four.    
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• Cooper is now tied for fifth on FPU's single-season saves list, matching Matt Bergandi (2017) and Nick Pate (2016).
• Rumbaugh has pitched one complete game in each of his three collegiate seasons.
