FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team picked up a thrilling 2-1 victory on Tuesday, knocking off 4th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona at Ramirez Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- - After a back-and-forth 17 minutes and a handful of missed opportunities, the Sunbirds started the scoring in the game's 18th minute.
- - FPU carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission but came out firing again in the second half, striking again in the 61st minute to push the lead to 2-0.
- - Seconds after the Broncos earned a penalty kick, Sunbird goalkeeper Patrick Timmer was hit with a red card at the 80:42 mark and ejected from the game.
- - Logan Dinsdale came on to make his collegiate debut between the pipes, but the penalty kick was successful and the Broncos cut their deficit to 2-1.
- - Playing a man down for the final 9:18 of the night, the Sunbirds continued to apply pressure and control the tempo, holding on for the season-opening victory.
SCORING:
- (17:50) Senior Eric Sanchez dribbled into the box, finding Isaiah Asencio in the box. Asencio fired to the lower left corner for the first score of the season.
- (60:08) Anthony Velarde took the ball down the left sideline before connecting with high school teammate Jose Vargas to give FPU a 2-0 edge.
- (80:42) Cyro Oliveira connected on the penalty kick, but the Broncos would get no closer.
STATS:
- - The Sunbirds were outshot 13-10, including a 7-4 mark in shots on frame.
- - CPP's Jakob Hansen picked up a pair of saves in the net, while Timmer recorded five saves before his exit.
- - The Pioneers took seven of the 12 corner kicks for the night.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- - Tuesday's victory marked the first time since 1986 that the Sunbirds have defeated Cal Poly Pomona.
- - FPU hasn't lost a season opener since 2013, when they fell to Sonoma State by a final of 1-0.
- - The Broncos have been ranked in each of their last three meetings against Fresno Pacific.
