FPU Baseball Stumbles against PLNU, Turns Focus to Final Series

SAN DIEGO – After completing Friday night's suspended game, the Fresno Pacific baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Point Loma on Saturday afternoon. The Sea Lions took the opener 8-2 before finishing off the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

SERIES GAME 2:  
• Eddie Sievers' RBI groundout started the scoring in the third inning, but PLNU centerfielder Micah Pries pulled the Sea Lions even in the home half.
• Pries struck again two frames later with a three-run shot down the right field line to give the home nine a 4-1 advantage.
• The Sunbirds chipped away in the middle innings, tying the game on a double off the bat of Adam Aleman in the seventh.
• Braden Frankfort homered to right field in the top of the 11th to put FPU in front 5-4, but Kyle Gracey answered with a solo blast in the home half to push the game to the 12th.
• The game was suspended on Friday evening due to lack of sunlight, and the Sea Lions and Sunbirds picked up where they left off early on Saturday morning.
• Fresno Pacific again took a one-run lead in the top of the 14th inning, but Pries' walk-off grand slam gave the Sea Lions their second victory of the weekend.
 
SERIES GAME 3:  
• Pries continued his hot series with an RBI double in the home first, and Travis Takata singled him home to get the Point Loma offense off and running early.
• Ross Dodds began the second with a bang, connecting on his third homer of the year to cut the Sunbird deficit to one.
• The Sea Lions responded with two runs in each of their next two trips to the plate, following by their seventh run of the game in the fourth inning.
• Hunter Villanueva hit his third home run of the weekend in the sixth, pushing him to within three dingers of tying the program's all-time record.
• A sac fly gave PLNU their final run of the game in the seventh, helping the Sea Lions cruise to their 13th straight win.
 
SERIES GAME 4:  
• Pries began the finale the same way he opened the twin bill, doubling to plate the first run of the game and give PLNU an early lead.
• Tristen Alvarez doubled home a run to tie the game in the third, and Frankfort followed with a homer that gave the Sunbirds a 3-1 lead.
• Point Loma first baseman Colby Kaneshiro singled home a run in the fifth to cut FPU's lead to one.
• With two outs and the bases loaded, shortstop Adam Rios pulled a grand slam to right field, giving the Sea Lions their final lead of the afternoon.
• Starter Wyatt Shackleford retired the side in order in the final frame, and Point Loma was able to sweep Fresno Pacific for the third straight season.
 
ON DECK:
• The Sunbirds return to action on Wednesday, May 8, when they take on Holy Names in the final series of the season. First pitch from Oakland is scheduled for noon.
