Horn’s Three Lifts FPU over APU 77-73

FRESNO, Calif. - R.J. Horn's three with three seconds left lifted the Fresno Pacific men's basketball team over Azusa Pacific 77-73 on Saturday night at the Special Events Center. The Sunbirds (6-19, 6-13 PacWest), now winners of two straight, snapped APU's (14-14, 9-9) four-game winning streak in the process.

"I'm tremendously proud of our team and I thought we really stuck together tonight," said head coach C.J. Haydock. "We talked a lot about how Azusa was playing as well as anyone in our conference right now, so a win like this is big. We took a few punches down the stretch and we could've wilted away, but we leaned into each other and showed some great toughness and togetherness."

Horn put together his best collegiate performance of his career, as the freshman scored a career-best 16 points and added seven assists, five steals and three rebounds. Spencer Krannitz added 19 points, six rebounds and four blocks for FPU, while Oliver Herting chipped in with 16 points and five rebounds and T.J. Viney scored nine points and dished out five assists.

"R.J. was unbelievable today," noted Haydock. "We gave him a tough assignment defensively, and then on top of that he gave us tremendous offensive production. He really impacted and changed the game in a bunch of ways tonight."

The Sunbirds put together a strong 40 minutes, shooting 42 percent from the floor with 11 threes while forcing 16 Cougar turnovers that turned into 25 points. FPU out-rebounded APU 40-38, which was helped out by Mike Crawley's 10 boards. Crawley added seven points and five steals to his line.

FPU led by as many as 10 and held a 40-38 advantage at the break. The Sunbirds led for the majority of the second half, but the Cougars hung around and eventually tied it up at 70 apiece.

Krannitz then nailed a three to give FPU a 73-70 lead with 46 seconds to play, but APU answered with a trey of its own. The next possession, Viney led the offense down the court and dished to Horn for the dagger from deep with three seconds left. APU's in-bound heave down the court was then picked off by Crawley, who drained his first free throw to ice the game.

Corey Langerveld led APU with 22 points, while Petar Kutlesic added 17 points and four assists.

The Sunbirds are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Dominican. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
