Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Dhillon’s Hat Trick Helps Mustangs Hand Sunbirds First Loss

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season on Sunday evening, falling 4-1 to Cal Poly on the road. The loss drops the Sunbirds to 1-1-1 for the year, while the Mustangs put themselves in the win column for the first time.

"We came out and played like we were nervous, and we were stunned early. We settled down and played very well with the exception of a few minutes, but these are the lessons learned by a young team," head coach Jaime Ramirez said. "We have a long season ahead of us, and I'm excited about our opportunity to respond. We have to be able to shake this one off."

The scoring started early, as Mustang forward Justin Dhillon found the net just 83 seconds into the game to give the home team a 1-0 advantage. Teammate Kenneth Higgins struck less than a minute later to pad the lead, and Cal Poly was able to carry a 2-0 edge into the locker room at intermission.

Dhillon came out firing again in the second half, tallying two more goals in the first five minutes to provide a comfortable 4-0 Mustang lead. Jorge Chedraui and Sergio Segura teamed up to put Fresno Pacific on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute, but the Sunbirds were forced to settle for just one goal.

The Blue and Orange are set to return to action on Tuesday, when they take on Cal Poly Pomona in the final game before PacWest play begins. Opening whistle from Kellogg Field is set for 7 p.m.

"It will be good for us because they are one of the top teams in the West Region and our styles complement each other a little bit," Ramirez said. "They are well-coached, and it is a game that has playoff ramifications."
